The Army Academy v The Irish Exiles at Farnham RFC – Sunday 7 October 2012
The class of 2012 Army Academy had it’s first outing of the season against the Irish Exiles Academy at the newly opened and very impressive Farnham Rugby clubhouse, the home of England legend Jonny Wilkinson.
The Academy have really got their act together; a very impressive off field coaching and management set up led by Director of Academy rugby Lt Col Trevor Cottee RE. The Coaching side headed up by Andy Campbell with ex senior XV players of the likes of Lee Soper, Gareth and Darrell Slade Jones in the coaching line up the Army young guns can’t help to be inspired.
If this outing is a sign of the future then we are in for a treat in the next few years. The Academy ran in eleven impressive trys against a spirited Irish Exiles team that pushed the Army team hard for 60 minutes, however the pace and agility of a very talented back row and three quarter line tore the plucky Exiles defence to shreds as fitness and power proved too much in the last twenty five minutes.
Last years U23 skipper Matt Bowmen (REME) showed he had lost none of his power and drive and a mixture of highly talented backs marshalled by Will Reeve at fly half had the rugby ball moving at great speed and direction.
The Academy have over 60 talented players on their books and have a well balanced fixture list with the U23 finishing off their matches against the Royal Navy U23 at Aldershot on Friday 23 Nov 12 and the RAF U23s on Sun 2 Dec at RAF Halton.
