The Army 7s campaign started in April this year with a 2 week training camp, out of Redford Bks, Edinburgh.
We enjoyed all the elements that make up spring in Scotland, from glorious sunshine to driving snow and everything in between!
Stage one was getting the guys back upto 7s fitness levels – some punishing indoor sessions were followed by outdoor sessions which were equally tough, and some sessions involved looking like a ballerina. The 7s training camp also visited Edinburgh Castle to allow the muscles to heal, whilst absorbing some of the local culture.
The Army 7s Squad entered into 3 tournaments as part of the Training Camp and the weather added some other dimensions to the game of rugby 7s.
The Hawick 7s was our first tournament in Scotland. We were afforded every weather system available in one day and, amazingly, only one match was delayed due to a white out!! It left the pitch very boggy and despite beating Melrose RFC we went out in the quarter finals with a note to self – bring studs on every future trip to Scotland.
The next tournament was the Berwick 7s, where the weather was much kinder, but the Army was once again drawn against Melrose RFC. It was a close fought affair with the Army losing out to Melrose this time.
The Army 7s Training Camp concluded the following weekend with the Langholm 7s where the Army reached the last 16.
