5 Rifles rugby team fresh from Olympic duties came up short in both their opening matches of this year’s inaugural ARU Championship. The first match, hosted by QDG saw the Paderborn based Infantrymen take on the Gutesloh based Gunners of 26 Regt RA. A tightly fought match was edged by the Gunners after their tight five took control of the line out and cut off the Rifles supply of ball. A try a piece saw an evenly balanced match decided by the boot and in the last ten minutes, the Gunners superior fitness saw the Rifles concede two penalties that were ultimately the difference. The Gunners celebrating having gained revenge for the final defeat in 2011 at the hands of 5 Rifles. Final score11-7 to 26 Regt RA.
Spurred on by the defeat by 26 Regt RA, 5 Rifles looked to get back to winning ways against the Welsh Cavalry. Despite conceding a penalty in front of the posts in the first minute, the Rifles with new half back pairing Capt Ben Cottenden and Pte Andrew Stanbury were still in the match at halftime. This was in the main thanks to a goal kick from Rfn Kirmond that matched Tpr Tukana’s earlier effort for the QDG. The Rifles had the bulk of the possesion having remedy the previous match’s lineout issues but did not manage another score despite having four shots on goal. The final word went to QDG’s Army Masters scrum half ‘Bongo’ Davies who stroked over a penalty in the last 4 minutes to snatch victory. 6-3 to the QDG.
