5 Rifles second XV defeated Lippe Lions, last seasons local champions, 42-5 at Lemgo on a cold but bright saturday afternoon. The second side formed to give young players a chance to play rugby away from the pressure of Army Cup matches and league fixtures took on their much more experienced opponents on the old Lemgo Barracks pitch.
The Bugles gave away height and weight advantage but more than made it for it in speed and fitness. Within 5 minutes a surging run by No8 LCpl Witherstone put the Bugles ahead. This was followed by the Rfn Castledine show as the newest Rifleman in the team converted 2 scores as well as going over himself for a try. Stung by the Rifles opening salvo, the Lions made some strong runs and managed to score out wide. A conversion attempt and a penalty both went wide to leave the Bugles in front. A period of Rifles pressure saw skipper Lt Alan Tuffin score twice and set up another. At halftime the coach rang the changes and the fresh legs pushed the team on and a great solo run saw Pte ‘Justin Biebier’ Swindells score out wide,
The young Bugles side were then placed under pressure at the set piece for the last 15 mins but were determined to have the last word. This they did after a great break from Rfn Sewell at scrum half to set up man of match and line out star Cfn Lee Mcloud who sped off to score. Final score 42-5.
The Silver Bugles side are looking for fixtures against other second teams or minor units in the garrison area. If you are interested contact Maj Wilkins 94879 3581.
