The Army Masters enjoyed a highly successful tour to the United States earlier this month, securing two victories over the US Military while strengthening international rugby links on both coasts.
Travelling from 6–16 June, the squad visited Seattle on the West Coast before heading to Washington for the second fixture. The tour came as part of a growing relationship with the US Military Rugby Football Club, following their recent visits to the UK over the past two years.
Memorable Opening in Seattle
The first match took place at the Seattle Seawolves’ Starfire Stadium, delivering a memorable experience both on and off the pitch. Played in front of an estimated 2,000 spectators, a significant proportion of a typical Major League Rugby crowd, the occasion featured a full matchday presentation including pyrotechnics, national anthems, and live music.
On the field, the contest was equally intense. A physically powerful US Military side tested the visitors throughout, but the Army Masters’ structured set piece and disciplined defence proved decisive in a 31–27 victory.
Strong Finish in Washington
The second fixture, held at the Brigade Sports Ground near the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, drew a crowd of approximately 200–300 spectators. Played in challenging 32-degree heat, the match demanded careful management of player conditioning and hydration.
In contrast to the tight opening encounter, this game was more expansive, with the US Military showing improved attacking shape. Despite the conditions and the opposition’s running threats, the Army Masters controlled the game effectively, securing a 39–15 win to complete an unbeaten tour.
Squad Depth Proves Crucial
The touring party consisted of 31 players and eight staff, with squad depth proving vital across the two matches. Several injuries sustained in the opening fixture reinforced the importance of travelling with a full group, allowing the team to maintain performance levels throughout the demanding schedule.
With only a short turnaround between matches and disrupted travel arrangements impacting preparation, careful planning and rotation ensured that the squad remained competitive and cohesive across both games.
Exceptional Hosting and Support
The tour was strongly supported by hosts on both coasts. In Seattle, the Seawolves organisation provided excellent hospitality, including hotel accommodation and transport, alongside financial assistance for tour participants. Players and staff also attended a Major League Rugby fixture during their stay, further enhancing the experience.
Facilities for both matches were of a high standard, with the Seattle venue offering a professional matchday environment, while Annapolis provided an impressive setting close to the Naval Academy.
Strengthening International Links
Beyond the rugby, the tour offered opportunities to build connections and promote Army Rugby internationally. Engagement with defence and local stakeholders formed part of the visit, helping to raise the profile of the Army Rugby Union in new environments.
Discussions during the tour also highlighted future opportunities for continued collaboration, including the potential development of an annual “Liberty Cup” fixture in Seattle.
A Tour to Build On
The Army Masters tour of the USA delivered competitive success, valuable experience for players and staff, and further strengthened ties with US Military rugby.
With strong foundations now in place, the tour represents another important step in expanding Army Rugby’s presence on the international stage.
