The British Army men’s rugby union team produced a determined and resilient performance at Allianz Stadium, pushing the Royal Navy men’s rugby union team all the way in a thrilling 41–36 contest in the opening round of the 2026 Inter Services Championship.
In their first fixture of this year’s campaign, the Army were met by a fast-starting Navy side who struck early to take control of the opening exchanges. Despite being put under immediate pressure, the Army showed composure to settle into the contest and begin building momentum through phases of structured play and increased territory.
Their response came through sustained pressure and growing confidence in attack. First-half tries from SSgt Matthew Dawson and Gnr Sitiveni Vasuturaga brought the Army firmly back into the contest, with LCpl Jack Johnson adding two conversions to keep the scoreboard pressure on the Navy. That persistence ensured the Army remained in touch heading into the break.
The second half saw the Army build on that momentum, with sharper handling and improved decision-making creating space across the field. Further tries from Rfn Vereimi Qorowale, Bdr Pete Austin, HLdr Tomasi Vula and LCpl Jack Johnson reflected their attacking rhythm and growing control of the game. Johnson also added a second conversion in the half, helping the Army close the gap as the match developed into a tightly contested battle.
With the fixture finely balanced in the closing stages, the Army continued to apply pressure right to the final whistle, demonstrating strong character, cohesion and determination throughout. While the result ultimately went in favour of the Navy, the performance underlined the Army’s ability to respond under pressure and compete at the highest level of inter-service rugby.
The match provided a clear statement of intent from the Army, with their second-half fightback and overall performance offering strong foundations as they continue their Inter Services Championship campaign.
