Army turn the lights off in Newquay

After six years of heading down the ‘long road West’, the Army 7s ended the last game in the last ever Newquay Surf 7s, defeating a powerful and physical ‘Egg 1’ team 19-0 in the main final. Six years ago, Sky Sports were filming the National Series at Newquay, however for a number of reasons this year was the last of the popular venues sevens outings.

As normal an early start meant that as the referee blew his whistle on the final match the Army team had been playing 8 hours on and off…… a testing day by anyones standards……

League wins against guest teams ‘Low Fat Milk and ‘Egg 2’ drew the team against a Gloucester team that had won in Bristol the previous week, Takapuna Turtles, however the REDs were in no mood to let a title they had won four times previous slip by this year, a spirited display saw the REDs win 40 – 0.

Last match of the day on a hot and windy Newquay coast had the sister team of Egg 2, Egg 1 step up to the plate, this was a big and physical side that had come to win, some huge hits and skillful passing had both teams testing the other, the Army 7s eventually ran out winners 19 – 0 to take the last ever title, many thanks to all that organised the competition over the years, its been a blast…..

Next up is Sevens and the City at a certain Saracens Rugby Club, next Saturday if you don’t want to cut the grass!
