ARU North Community 7s Day

Wednesday 3rd July 2019 saw teams from across the North of England and Scotland assemble at Catterick Garrison for the first annual ARU Community 7’s tournament of its kind. The teams competing were; the Army in Scotland, Marne Barracks, 3 Med Regt, 5 Med Regt and a Catterick Garrison Barbarians team.

The day saw some brilliant rugby from all teams involved.  Catterick Barbarians, a last minute entry into the tournament, in particular played with a unique brand of flare and excitement – a great spectacle of rugby. The group stages culminated in a 3 Med Regt v 5 Med Regt “Grudge” match which saw 5 Regt edge past their counterparts with a dogish performance.

Due to the extremely hot weather the officials and organisers deemed it necessary culminate the days competition with a top of the table playoff.  The final saw the Army In Scotland and Marne Barracks play in an enticing and nail biting game of rugby, a one for one try fest kind of game came down to the last conversion of the day to decide the result. Marne Barracks scored with the final play of the game and needed the conversion to draw even.  The kick, in front of the posts, was unfortunately missed giving the Army in Scotland the win in the most dramatic of ways which quite nicely summarised and encapsulated the spirit of the day.
