The Army Rugby Union Referees’ Society (ARURS) recently gathered for its Annual General Meeting and Awards Dinner — a night of reflection, celebration, and recognition of outstanding contribution to Army rugby refereeing. Held in a spirited and collegial atmosphere, the event brought together members from across the society to honour achievements on and off the pitch as well as provide updates across the union.
The evening’s special guest was former professional player Richard Thorpe, whose engaging speech offered insight into the demands and rewards of elite-level rugby. Drawing on his own experiences, Thorpe praised the dedication of referees and highlighted their essential role in upholding the integrity and spirit of the game.
A number of individuals were recognised for their exceptional service and performance over the past year:
- New Referee of the Year – Russell Atherton, for his impressive debut season and rapid development on the whistle.
- ARURS Award for Commitment – Chris McGhee, whose unwavering dedication to the Society and its values stood out.
- Referee of the Year – Rob Hitch, honoured for consistently high standards and professionalism throughout the season.
- ARURS Caps were awarded to Stephen Walley and Ben Davey for officiating in the prestigious Inter Services senior men’s and women’s fixtures as part of the Team of Three — a significant milestone in any referee’s career.
- Golden Whistle Award – Charles Bromley Gardner received this distinguished honour for 15 years of service and dedication to ARURS.
The Society extends its heartfelt congratulations to all this year’s award winners. Their commitment and excellence continue to elevate the standards of Army rugby officiating. Well done all!
