BAG Win Baltic Battle

BAG rugby took up the challenge of a Danish National team about to embark on its 2013 ENC campaign in a bitterly cold Aarhus on the Baltic coast of Denmark on Saturday 09 Mar 13. Deprived of a fixture against Belgium A, the BAG outfit were caught a little cold in the first half hour as the rampant Norsemen fresh from winter training tore into them, BAG conceding tries in the 2nd and 5th mins to go 12-0 before a brief fightback saw BAG skipper Captain Ben McNeil SCOTS DG slot a penalty to make it 12-3 at the quarter hour mark.

The Danes were not finished and after two more tries, one converted, BAG were 26-3 down at the half hour mark. Coaches WOII Scotty Willson 28 RE and SSgt Rob Jones QDG made a few tactical changes and were rewarded with a well worked try for LCpl JV Vimataki 4 SCOTS. The try was converted by McNeil to leave the BAG team trailing 26-10 at halftime.

More changes for both sides and the advantage of a a strong wind gave BAG the impetus in the second half and after a purple patch for McNeil in which he scored 14 points in converting his two tries BAG, were in touch trailing 26-24. The BAG pack built the pressure and only strong Danish defencestopped further scores.

Army Senior XV winger Tpr Bobo QDG had other ideas and against a tiring defence he scored two tries, one of which was converted by McNeil, to see BAG home 36-26. A hard match against a team ranked 65 in the world has set up BAG for the chance to go through the season undefeated.

The final match will take place in Austria against the powerfiul scrummaging Austrians on 23rd March 2013.

The BAG coaches will however have their fingers crossed in the hope that the Army Rugby Union Community Cup final between SCOTS DGs and 28 RE passes without injury to any of the squad. The final will be held at Athlone Barracks Sennelager on 20 Mar 13 with a 1430hrs KO. Supporters are most welcome.
