SCOTS DG played 4 SCOTS on 8 th January in the penultimate pool game before the quarter final’s start next week.
It was wet and slippery with 4 SCOTS keeping it tight from the Kick Off and making good yards in the close. SCOTS DG soaked up the pressure but with the elements against them in the first half it was difficult to make any ventures into the opposition’s 22. Silly penalties being given away by SCOTS DG and a clever cross field kick saw 4 SCOTS grab the first points with a try in the left hand corner.
A lack of confidence in building up the phases were letting SCOTS DG down at first, but as they settled into their rhythm passes started to coming together. The electric pace of Matacagi and Komaiyasa in the back three saw SCOTS DG go round the outside and return the score to 5-5. It stayed this way until the half-time whistle.
The second half immediately saw SCOTS DG using the elements to their advantage and pinned their Scottish neighbours in their own 22. Pressure told and a drive from 5 metres out saw Tamani go over to score. SCOTS DG remained in the ascendancy although some dogged work by the 4 SCOTS pack always kept the pressure on at the break down. More silly penalties were given away and allowed 4 SCOTS to use their ‘pick and go’ tactics to good effect. Strong running by the 4 SCOTS centre Henderson gave them the platform to work from but SCOTS DG defence held true.
More accurate kicking into the corners meant that SCOTS DG once again camped out in the opposition 22. Outside centre Kelly for SCOTS DG drew in 2 defenders before deftly releasing Matacagi to finish it off in the corner.
A further penalty by the SCOTS DG fly half, McNeil meant the first points of 2013 went to SCOTS DG. Final score was 18 – 5.
Plenty of points to work on for both teams but the base level standard has now been set as SCOTS DG look towards 3 RHA on the 11 th January. A strong performance against a solid 3RHA pack will set the regiment up nicely leading into the quarter finals next week against 5 SCOTS.
