The Army Rugby Stadium once again provided a poignant setting for the annual Rugby for Remembrance fixture, as the British Army men’s rugby union team secured a 31–12 victory over the touring USA Military team.
Before kick-off, both teams, match officials, guests, and supporters observed the Act of Remembrance. The moving ceremony included a performance of The Last Post by B/Major Seb Yaseen from 5 Rifles, stirring renditions of both national anthems sung by Amelia Underwood-King, and guards of honour provided by Army Cadets and members of the Royal British Legion’s local branch. The moment of silence and reflection was a powerful reminder of the shared sacrifices honoured on Armistice Day.
On the field, the contest marked the second annual meeting between the sides, with the British Army having triumphed 47–17 in 2024. This year’s encounter proved a more tightly contested affair, as the USA Military team showed significant improvement and great determination throughout.
Five different try-scorers contributed to the Army’s 31–12 win, with LCpl Mikey McDonald (RE) opening the scoring after a strong individual effort. Rfn Vereimi Qorowale (RIFLES) added a second with trademark pace and power, before Dylan Morris crossed following relentless pressure. Fly-half LCpl Jack Johnson (RE) was accurate from the tee to give the home side a commanding 19–0 half-time lead.
The visitors struck back in the second half through Ryan Leonard, capitalising on a line-out opportunity, before the Army extended their advantage via LCpl Oni Nayagi’s (R YORKS) well-finished try. The USA side continued to battle hard, with James Irey driving over for a deserved score, converted by Logan Legg, reducing the gap to 24–12. However, the Army sealed the result late on when Pte Adriu Muritoki (SCOTS) broke clear on the counter, Johnson’s conversion rounding off a well-earned 31–12 victory.
The fixture once again demonstrated the spirit of camaraderie, respect, and remembrance that defines this annual occasion. Both teams now look ahead to continuing to strengthen the bonds of friendship and shared service through rugby.
