It is with great sadness that the Army Rugby Union marks the passing of Lieutenant Colonel William “Bill” Butt on the 27th April. A cherished member of our rugby family and a true servant of the game.
Bill was a true rugby man—his passion for the game matched only by his deep well of knowledge, which he generously shared over decades of involvement at all levels. His enthusiasm never wavered, and he remained a steadfast supporter of Army Rugby throughout his life, contributing tirelessly to its growth and spirit.
More than anything, Bill was a source of encouragement, insight, and inspiration to those around him. He had a quiet strength, always there with a word of support or a thoughtful perspective. But perhaps most enduringly, he was a man whose company people genuinely enjoyed—warm, wise, and always welcoming.
We honour his memory with gratitude for all he gave to the game and to those privileged to have known him. His legacy will live on in the people he supported, inspired, and befriended over so many years.
There will be a memorial service taking place later this year.
