The Army Rugby Union was saddened to learn of the passing of Major General John MacDonald CB CBE DL, a distinguished soldier and an outstanding servant of the game.
Born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, John MacDonald earned eight international caps for Scotland as a prop during the 1966 and 1967 Five Nations Championships, representing his country with great distinction. At club level, he played for Watsonians and London Scottish, earning widespread respect for his strength, skill, and leadership in the front row.
Alongside his international rugby career, Major General MacDonald enjoyed a highly distinguished military career with the Royal Corps of Transport, rising to senior command. Within Army Rugby, he made a lasting contribution, most notably leading 63 (Parachute) Company RASC to victory in the Army Rugby Cup in the late 1960s, including the 1970 triumph.
Major General MacDonald’s legacy is one of outstanding service to both his country and the sport of rugby. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by the Army Rugby community.
