Gnr Senitiki Nayalo (7 Para RHA) continued his outstanding record of finding the whitewash in the Championship this weekend, but his second half effort for Coventry against Ampthill was in vain as the West Midlanders slipped to a narrow defeat in Mid-Bedfordshire.

Ampthill’s points all came from the boot, with Gnr Nayalo’s score the first of three tries for Coventry which all came in the final quarter. However, what would have been a dramatic comeback hit the buffers when what would have been a scoring pass in the final couple of minutes hit the deck, Coventry losing 21-19.

In fact, all three matches to include Army players at professional level ended in defeat for the trio.

On Friday night, Glasgow Warriors’ forgettable run of results in Belfast continued for another season, the Scottish outfit losing 35-29 away to Ulster in their United Rugby Championship opener.

Cpl Lewis Bean (Rifles) was a second half replacement for the Warriors, and he came on during his team’s most impressive period of the match, as they fought their way back from an 11-point deficit to not just earn two bonus points but also give themselves a sniff of a win in the final quarter.

The other match to include Army representation this weekend was at the Recreation Ground, where LCpl Semesa Rokoduguni (Scots DG) lined up on the wing for Bath’s first home game of the season against Newcastle.

Newcastle took the lead after 11 minutes and did not look back, adding two more tries and a penalty to lead 20-3 at the break.

The second half was more hard-fought, and while Bath outscored the visitors 10-0 this was scant consolation, the Falcons heading back to the north east with a 20-13 win under their belts.
