5 Rifles finished their ARU Championship campaign with a resounding 62-15 win over the Hameln based Sappers 28 Engr Regt. The second match between these two sides was a much more open affair in which the Sappers backline more than matched the Rifles three quarters. The real difference was in the forwards where the Rifles dominated the lineout and scrimmage giving the backline an abundance of ball. The game was played in a good spirit with plenty of good flowing rugby for the small crowd watching. Rfn Tawake went over early in the second half for his hat trick of tries to complete his man of the match performance.
The match also marked the last appearance in Rifles colours by Rfn Mickey Wara who returns to Fiji after 12 years service and it was also the first for a number of second team players who took their chance with both hands.
The focus of rugby now turns to 26 Regt RA as they try to overhaul the Rifles in an attempt to win the coveted quarter final slot in the UK ARU championship. Their back to back matches Vs the Sappers will see a renewal of the old Gunner V Sapper rival.
