Skipper Captain Mark Lee AGC (ALS) led his BAG side to a good victory in this pre-season friendly in Sennelager, Germany. A crowd of around 250 were treated to some fine running rugby in 36 degrees of heat as well as some bone crunching tackles.
The match pitted the organised skills of the RFH XV against the potent running threat of the mainly Fijian BAG side. The first 15 minutes saw the power of the RFH forwards threaten the BAG line on several occasions and after a string of infringements the referee gave a penalty in kicking range which gave the visitors their first points of the match for a 3-0 lead.
This seemed to wake up the BAG players who started to play in the wider channels. Fly half and playmaker Capt Ben Cottenden 5 Rifles sprayed out the passes to try and get the fleet footed Tpr Bobo QDG and LCpl Namadila 1 YORKS into play. After a number of good run both Bobo and Namadila managed to cross the line with Cottenden able to add the extras for the second try to give the servicemen a 12-3 lead. A further try by Pte Dawai 1 YORKS and a penalty from LCpl Shorter 28 Engr Regt gave the men in blue a comfortable cushion of 20-3 at half-time.
The RFH team came out with the bit between their teeth in the second half and only a superb defensive effort from Rfn Nalewabau 5 Rifles, Cpl Mossop 1 Yorks and man of the match Cpl McKenzie 3 Bn REME kept the RFH scoreless until the last five minutes. The pressure eventually told and the visitors had the final say to bring the final score to 20-10 to BAG.
Special thanks must go to the NAAFI for sponsoring the match and to RFH for making the effort to come over to BAG. You can read more about the charity at Rugby For Heroes
