{"id":27698,"date":"2023-05-18T13:20:44","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T13:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.armyrugbyunion.org.uk\/?p=27698"},"modified":"2023-05-18T13:20:44","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T13:20:44","slug":"harris-happy-to-play-part-in-inter-service-championship-retention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.armyrugbyunion.org.uk\/harris-happy-to-play-part-in-inter-service-championship-retention\/","title":{"rendered":"Harris happy to play part in Inter Service Championship retention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t\t<div id=\"fws_664055bf6620d\"  data-column-margin=\"default\" data-midnight=\"dark\"  class=\"wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_row\"  style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; \"><div class=\"row-bg-wrap\" data-bg-animation=\"none\" data-bg-overlay=\"false\"><div class=\"inner-wrap\"><div class=\"row-bg viewport-desktop\"  style=\"\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"row_col_wrap_12 col span_12 dark left\">\n\t<div  class=\"vc_col-sm-12 wpb_column column_container vc_column_container col no-extra-padding inherit_tablet inherit_phone \"  data-padding-pos=\"all\" data-has-bg-color=\"false\" data-bg-color=\"\" data-bg-opacity=\"1\" data-animation=\"\" data-delay=\"0\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"vc_column-inner\" >\n\t\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t<p><strong>Fly-half, WO2 Chris Harris (R Welsh), was delighted to have played a leading part as the Army Masters defeated Navy Mariners 38-16 to win the Inter-Services Championship.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The stand-off was forced into action earlier than expected after starting No. 10 Maj Rob Mitchell (RLC) was forced off through injury with his side leading 7-6 thanks to a converted try from Maj Matthew Morgan (RAMC).<\/p>\n<p>But Harris went onto play a pivotal role as the Red Shirts pulled away, adding the extras to a score from LSgt Iggy Putty (WG) with the final play of the first half before repeating the trick following tries from SSgt David Best (RAPTC), SSgt Vasa Bai (RAMC) and Sgt Peceli Nacavamuto (RE).<\/p>\n<p>Having also landed a penalty early in the second period, WO2 Harris ended with 11 points and he admitted: \u201cThe coaches wanted to bring me on at half-time to add dynamism, pace and intensity because I like to play a free and open game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut Rob got a knock on his leg which gave me an opportunity to come on earlier and show my skills, and lucky enough I had a good day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur pack has been dominant this year, it\u2019s very rare we lose any scrums, and I\u2019ve played with Iggy for about 15 years so we bounce off each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve played league and union together so when we\u2019re on the pitch we know exactly what we want to do and how we want to play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A physical contest saw the Army receive four yellow cards, while their opponents had one along with a red card midway through the third quarter, leading WO2 Harris to explain: \u201cIt was two teams putting it on the line for the Inter-Services Championship. The Navy had a good win against the RAF and so did we, so we knew what was coming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were some hard hits which was to be expected, but it\u2019s just the ferocity of the game and at the end everyone comes together which is what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A stellar campaign has seen the Masters beaten just once \u2013 by Army Scotland \u2013 but the fly-half felt the defeat could have been a blessing in disguise.<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cThe average age in our team is 42, when we played Army Scotland the average age was 24.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey took it to us and were strong and hard, but it was still a close game. You have to dust yourself off from losses, fix the wrongs, make them right and keep going forwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long, hard season, but a good one \u2013 we\u2019ve got stronger as a unit throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve put a lot of bonding into it, changed the way we\u2019ve played, and I think it showed with a win against a strong Navy team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before looking ahead to what the future holds, WO2 Harris paid tribute to the coaching staff who played a key role in another fine campaign.<\/p>\n<p>He ended: (Head coach Capt) Mark (Eastley) came in at the beginning of the season and changed every dynamic, he grinded us, put a new structure in and the backroom staff have been great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter where or when, they\u2019ve always been there to give us help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s never just the 15 on the park or the 23 on the sheet, it\u2019s everyone putting the work in and luckily enough we got the win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow we\u2019ll have a couple of months off although a couple of us go into rugby league, but then we\u2019ll come back, reassess where we\u2019re at and hopefully have some more new fellas come in.\u201d<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"divider-wrap\" data-alignment=\"default\"><div style=\"margin-top: 12.5px; height: 1px; margin-bottom: 12.5px;\" data-width=\"100%\" data-animate=\"\" data-animation-delay=\"\" data-color=\"extra-color-1\" class=\"divider-border\"><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \" >\n\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t<p>Words \u00a9 Richard Ashton \/ New Dogs, Old Tricks<\/p>\n<p>Images &#8211; Alligin Photography \u00a9 Lee Crabb<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t<\/div> \n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div> \n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Fly-half, WO2 Chris Harris (R Welsh), was delighted to have played a leading part as the Army Masters defeated Navy Mariners 38-16 to win the Inter-Services Championship.
