Applications are invited for the post of Head Coach to the Men’s over 35’s XV known as the Masters.

The successful applicant will be expected to start on the 01 June 2024 and it is desirable that the successful applicant completes at least 2 seasons.

This is a high performance Representative Army level appointment that demands an individual to be able to demonstrate commitment, capacity and competence in a success orientated environment. While results are key, relationships, organisation, and communication are fundamental to enabling attainment. You will oversee the coaching and player pathway for men’s over 35’s representative rugby.

Minimum Qualifications – Applicants must be Regular or Reserve members of the UK British Army. They must be able to demonstrate previous and current coaching in a high-performance environment where CPD is evident, current and supportive of understanding coaching and player development in the modern game.

The closing date for applications is 1200hrs Fri 26 April 2024. Applicants that do not pass the CV sift will be contacted via email by Mon 29 April 2024. Applicants that pass the CV sift will be invited to an interview on a date week commencing 06 May 2024 via MS Teams or in person depending on geography. The interview will also seek evidence of previous coaching competencies.

The selection panel is provisionally planned to consist of the Director of Masters Rugby (DoMR), and 1 x ARU Board Member.

Candidates called for interview will be notified on completion of all interviews if they have been successful or not.

ARMY RUGBY UNION – HEAD COACH – Terms of Reference

The Head Coach will hold a minimum of a Level 2 Coaching Certificate and be working towards their Level 3 certificate and be responsible for the ARU Masters XV.

 

The Head Coach will have considerable delegated power from the Management Board to enable them, in conjunction with the DoMR, to choose their coaching team, develop a style of play and the Head Coach will have a critical say on team selection. All authority will be subject to scrutiny as appropriate, and the Head Coach will be required to provide regular updates on team issues to the DoMR. The Head Coach will also be expected to support and consult with the DoMR and Team Manager on management and administration matters as appropriate.

 

The Head Coach will be responsible for all aspects of on field activity for the ARU Masters XV. They will also be responsible for:

 

  • Creating the high-performance environment expected for the ARU Masters.

 

  • Coaching and developing players to reach their potential in a high-performance environment in order to exploit the potential of the staff and players.

 

  • Managing all on-field playing matters.

 

  • In conjunction with the DoMR and Team Manager, advise on the fixtures for Masters Rugby and then provide input to the annual budget submission for the season by June each year.

 

  • Producing and controlling the coaching and conditioning programme throughout the season including supporting the coach development of those involved within the Masters squad and staff.

 

  • Co-ordinating and inserting a fitness and development programme for the ARU Masters Squad in conjunction with the Conditioning Coach prior to the commencement of and during the Season.

 

  • Coaching the ARU Masters Squad to standards designed to ensure that the Team and each member plays to their full potential and is well-organised and disciplined both on and off the field.

 

  • Identifying talent and potential for the ARU Masters Squad throughout the season and in each calendar year through the Corps and Garrison rugby network.

 

  • Attend such seminars and briefing sessions as may be arranged or organised by ARU from time to time.

 

  • Produce a coaching action plan (for all of the ARU Masters XV squad members) at designated points throughout the season.

 

  • Develop junior coaches and advise the DoMR on succession planning for the Coaching Staff for the ARU Masters.

 

  • Supporting the Team Manager in the liaison with Corps and Unit teams on the in-season management of ARU Masters representative players where applicable.
