It is with great pleasure that the Army Rugby Union announce the appointment of Captain Mal Roberts RLC as the Head Coach for the Army Academy. Mal takes over the reigns from Lt Col Mike Atkinson who steps down on assignment to the USA after two years at the helm. Mal comes with significant experience of Army rugby having played for and captained the Army Senior XV. Mal is the most successful Army skipper of all time. In addition Mal has caps for the Combined Services, Newbury RFC, Cornish All Blacks, English Counties and the Barbarians. Since retiring from playing in 2009, Mal has been active as a coach for a number of civilian clubs including Cornish All Blacks, Weston Super Mare and Camberley. He has also been an active backs coach with both the Army Senior XV and UKAF.
Director of Academy Rugby Lt Col Jason Kennedy said “We are delighted to announce Mal as the new Head Coach for the Academy, I am certain he will bring a different focus to Army Academy Rugby. His playing career speaks for itself and he has a wide variety of coaching experience. He will complement the work done previously by Mike Atkinson, and I am sure will aim to match and exceed Mike’s excellent record”.
Mal brings a new look to the coaching team with SSgt David Bates R SIGNALS remaining as forwards coach, Corporal Matt Lamont RLC takes over as the Defence and Strength and Conditioning Coach and Captain Jason Davies QDG takes over as the backs coach.
