1 RHA emerged victorious in a hard fought battle played out under the lights of Larkhill.
In a classic match of age and experience pitted against youth and pace, the opening ten minutes set the pattern for the rest of the game.
The Griffins encamped upon the 1 RHA line for an extended forwards battle, with the defence holding firm and eventually forcing a turn over.
In the blink of an eye 1 RHA turned defence into attack, scoring a length of the pitch try from the end of the world.
A chastened Griffins team battened down the hatches and, keeping it tight, started to get significant returns from their set piece play, eventually resulting in two catch and drive tries from the lineout.
1 RHA answered with some effective counter rucking and broken field play to stretch the game, and their efforts were rewarded with another couple of tries before the break.
In the second half, the game remained tight, with some hard running from the Griffins centres resulting in two well-earned tries, but in the end the youthful exuberance of 1 RHA proved irrepressible as they carried the win five tries to four.
